My name is Tellat. I have been at war for nearly all my life. For over 600 years I and my allies have fought against the greatest danger that the galaxy has ever known. Now, this conflict is nearly over. Finally, I will be able to rest. Over six hundred years ago, I wa just an ordinary man. I had a home from which I commuted daily to my job as a systems programmer for my local municipality. I had a loving wife and two beautiful children. We had an ordinary life - I won't lie to you and tell you that everything in my life was perfect. No matter what the historians might tell you about my life, remeber this, at least. My life was absolutely ordinary. It had its highs and its lows, in absolutely normal prportions. Then came the day of darkness. The day of destruction. The day of death. I was at work that day - nothing unusual about that. We first heard about the coming of the Cattreth on a special news bulletin during lunch. We didn't know that it was the Cattreth at that time. The report just mentioned that there had been some interferance and loss of contact with manyof the planet's communications satelites. We didn't think much of it and the news service didn't really seem particularly concerned either. That changed two hours later when the bombs started falling. At the time of the Cattreth attack, our planet, Paxtria, had been a fragmented collection of quarrelling countries. We had avoided major warfare for the last 100 years only by the slimmest of margins - several imes! Perhaps this diluted the effectiveness of our response against the initail bombing. Perhaps our response against so overwhelming an enemy would have been ineffectual in any event. The reality of the situation was that over two thirds of our population were exterminated in the first bombing raid. Included in that count were the three members of my family. After the dust cleared, We found that the militaries of every country on Paxtria had been wiped out. Most major cities were rubble. Communications had been disrupted, transportation
