Ruminations on "Genesis of the Borg/Götterdämmerung of the Borg" Beware! Spoilers! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * First off - this story was considerably easier to write than "A Rolling Stonehenge." I put this down to having a very clear idea of what was going to happen (as opposed to having to choose between multiple mythoi). I am one of those 'thinks about the stories while riding to/from work' type of authors and this one came together pretty easily. In fact, this story was rough-finished in only a week. Now, for the juicy bits! Things I wanted to establish in this episode: 1. Get Mantron back together 2. Introduce the "mysterious figure®" 3. Have the first serious challenge to Seetamyn's authority 4. Reveal a little bit more of Thog's background 5. Reveal the OverMind's duplicity 6. Have a MVA Battle Along the way, I inadvertantly introduced Ensign Hirthnole, who kinda took over the story. I decided to punish him by destroying his beloved unicycle, but then relented and got him a new one. I think Hirthnole will continue to be the 'crazy old uncle' of the Menagerie family. Now, how did I do? Considering that its is MLB Playoff season lets use some baseball terms: 1 - I think Mantron has come through things pretty well. I wanted him to re-establish himself as the ship's conscience after the loss of Arlyn as well as to re-integrate him with Banjo and Ustrano. Once again, he has saved everyone. I have also laid the ground work for a subplot that will resolve itself in Episode 13 (I hope!) Call it a solid Double. 2 - The mysterious figure has been introduced, and I hope it is apparent that the figure holds no love for the Menagerie Eh - no big deal - a base on balls. 3 - A near-mutiny avoided at the last moment by Mantron, with Seetamyn none the wiser. I had briefly toyed with the idea of having Seetamyn actually thrown in the brig and Mantron rescuing him, but I think this works better. I could bring up the the dichotomy of what Seetamyn THOUGHT was happening vs what we all KNEW was happening and I think that worked out pretty well. I think this was not too bad - Double. 4 - A tiny bit more of Thog was revealed, we'll gat a few more teases this season but all the big revelations will have to wait until Season 2. Not much ventured, not much gained - a base on balls. 5 - The OverMind has been found out and has offered a plausable explanation. Is it telling the truth now? It worked for me - call it a Single. 6 - The battle - oh well, can't win 'em all! Alan's "Disintegration" was a much better battle sequence than mine. I guess I need to work on that. This was a Strike Out, pure and simple. As always, comments welcome! The next Episode, "Aggregation", will be available 11/9!
